Xinhua News Agency of China reported: “Senior Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi held a dialogue with the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at the latter’s request on Tuesday and Wednesday in the U.S. state of Hawaii. Yang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, conducted in-depth exchanges with Pompeo on China-U.S. relations as well as global and regional issues of mutual concern. Both sides fully expounded their respective stances and deemed the dialogue to be constructive. They agreed to take action to implement in earnest the consensus reached by the heads of state of the two countries and maintain contact and communication.”
The meeting was instead a surprise, and no agenda was disclosed in advance. Amid the hype created by the Western media and criticism of China at its peak, such a meeting is a rather big surprise. Whereas, the Sino-US relations are passing through the lowest level and anti-China sentiments at height, high-level meeting is a miracle.
Even though the Western Media is giving various versions of the meeting and trying to project that the meeting was arranged on the request of the Chinese side, and the discussions were all about Pandemic, Hong Kong, Uighurs Human rights, and Trade-related issues, etc. However, all these are the buzz words and tune beautiful music.
It is evident that the Presidential Election in the U.S. is coming soon – November 2020, and President Trump is a candidate and wanted to be re-elected for another term. Apart from his performance, his popularity graph has declined in the recent surveys conducted by various organizations in the U.S. However, his handling of Pandemic and recent protests erupted after the brutal-murder of George Floyd is always a question mark in the mind of an average American.
Just like in any other democratic country, the candidates have to convince the voters to be elected. Under the present scenario, President Trump might need even more strong reasons to convince the general public.
Asia Times reported: “Steve Bannon, former senior White House strategist and CEO of Donald Trump’s winning 2016 presidential campaign, believes China will be center stage at the upcoming U.S. presidential election.”
It is believed that the meeting between the two senior diplomats is the first step in this direction. It is rather too early to conclude the outcome of this high-level meeting. However, one can understand the real importance of China –relations for President Trump in respect of November-elections. One can expect more contacts between China and the U.S. in the days to come, even high level up to President Trump with President Xi.
For President Trump, elections are crucial, and he may go to any extent to win the election and re-elect as President for another term 2020-2024. President Trump is a successful businessman and master of negotiations. He knows how to strike the deals. He will utilize all of his expertise to drag China on his side and convince the American public to vote for him. Definitely, a deal is possible when both parties are satisfied and keeps their interests at prime. China may have its own interests and may raise a few demands to President Trump. However, the Chinese are very mature, sensible, and wise people. After having centuries of colonialization, suppression, and victimization, the Chinese have become more careful and sophisticated. China may not demand any irrational or illogical condition, but will definitely protect its national interests.
As a matter of fact, China never wanted to spoil its relations with the U.S. or with any other country and tried its best to avoid any confrontation. China observed maximum restraints and patience, but when the U.S. compelled China, then they took soft retaliatory measures. China has never shown any hostile or aggressive attitude toward the U.S. A possible deal may come out in the shape of political milage for China and economic gains for the U.S.
Optimistically, It is believed that the relations between the U.S. and China may normalize in the very near future. It will be good news for the whole world, as two significant economies may contribute toward the global economy and stability. Contrarily, it can spoil the whole world and disaster for global stability & prosperity.
